First, vacuum both front and back of the rug until there is no visible dust on the floor.  This may take 30 or more flips and vacuuming sessions.  We use a commercial compressor to remove all dirt, dust and grit to assure all dust is removed prior to wetting the rug.  If all the dirt is not removed, it will appear dingy after cleaning.  A caution:  do not use a vacuum with a beater bar.  It is not recommended for Oriental rug vacuuming.  

Shedding is primarily due to remaining grit cutting the wool at the base of the knot which is then walked out into the environment or vacuumed up.  Shedding is not normal in an Oriental rug and indicates inefficient vacuuming has left behind faceted grit that cuts the rug fibers.  If you find your Oriental rug shedding with adequate vacuuming, the vacuum is not as effective as needed.  While wall-to-wall carpeting manufacturers recommend vacuuming one time per week per adult, the recommended vacuuming schedule is as needed.  The natural lanolin and nap prevent much of the usual dirt from working its way into the rug and only surface vacuuming is typically needed.   

Next, test for colorfastness using a wet, white wash cloth and test colors, especially reds. If no colors run, then, use a diluted gentle liquid soap and soft brush, avoiding excessive brushing on the edge and working in the direction of the nap.   

IMPORTANT – test the cleaner in an inconspicuous area to make sure it will not affect color and cause color run. 

Clean each area of the rug, careful not to use too much soap.  A green product, such as we use in the showroom, is best.  Rinse, rinse, rinse until the rinse water is clear.  This, also, will take many, many rinses.  The best place for this is on a clean driveway.   

Finally, to protect your investment, hang to dry COMPLETELY!
