So, what must you look for when choosing a handmade Oriental rug?

The Good

· Healthy wool - Soft, fine wool which is not dry, coarse, or stale to the touch

· Silk—good sheen, fine detail in the outline of color boundaries, many knots per square inch

· Rug does not shed significantly

· Repairs, if any, are professional and thorough

· No structural damage

· Evenly woven with consistent gauge of knots

· Sheared evenly

· No odors or permanent stains

· Wear, if any, is even with little variation of pile height

· Symmetrical, designs where intended, however there may be noticeable differences in the pattern giving distinct identity to the piece

· Relatively straight edges

· Lays flat

The Bad

· Heavy color run, sun fade, or rust damage

· Repairs are poor and patchy

· Uneven weaving techniques (hazy lines, gaps in edge stitching)

· Varying pile height - uneven shearing and/or wear

· Permanent creases

· Hard curled edges

· Foundation visible in areas

· Markered, chalked or painted to disguise flaws, wear or other damage

The Ugly

· Permanent pet stains

· Dry Rot and water damage

· Markered pile or foundation to disguise wear

· Large areas of foundation exposed
