The distinctive destination
for quality Oriental rugs
since 1986
Though these fibers tend to be stable once manufactured, the ‘new carpet smell’ comes from the backing which includes adhesives that also give the backing flexibility and that adhesive can make you sick. A known carcinogen, formaldehyde, is widely used in glue, and that glue is used in carpet. Even in small amounts, formaldehyde can cause breathing difficulty in sensitive individuals. Several other chemicals are also present in the adhesive and backing of synthetic rugs and wall-to-wall carpeting, and have varying dangers to mental and physical health. The greenest choice is a carpet without adhesives, and a true hand made Oriental rug is the original adhesive-free choice. Accept no substitutes, such as hand-tufted, backed rugs or other imitations.
Wool, silk, and cotton, the components of our hand made Oriental rugs, are very green carpet materials because of their natural attributes. Wool fibers are renewable, biodegradable, and naturally resistant to mildew. Silk is naturally nonflammable, strong, and not affected by static charge problems. Cotton, most often the foundation of newer rugs, becomes stronger when wet. It is absorbent, however, and is subject to mold and mildew if not thoroughly dried.
Oriental rugs last for decades when handled with just a little TLC. Rotating the rug to give even wear when placed in a location of high traffic prolongs the life of the rug. Cleaning spills immediately, vacuuming when needed, and professional, hands only, hand washed cleaning when needed, perhaps every 3 – 5 years, adds years to the life of a rug. Worn rugs can easily be repaired or restored to its original beauty. A much neglected rug can even be used to patch other rugs when it no longer has a useful life.
Our rugs lower the negative impact on the environment by using responsible manufacturing practices and sustainable harvesting techniques of natural resources. With a life span of decades and decades, and a life cycle from dust to dust, our rugs are the green choice for your home.
