The distinctive destination
for quality Oriental rugs
since 1986
Critical to choosing the best quality rug is to know and trust your rug dealer. Here are a few clues to identifying a fine quality Oriental rug that can help you avoid the costly mistake of purchasing an inferior piece:
· Fine quality wool will render a well made rug.
· Colors pass the wet white washcloth test - they do not stain the cloth.
· Knots should be tight and the rug impenetrable with your fingers.
· Artificial silk is a mercerized cotton and will not have a high knot count like real silk.
· A genuine silk rug will have a silk foundation.
· The pattern should be as distinct on the back as it is on the front.
· There should be no backing on an authentic handmade rug, nor have either the fringe or the edging machine-sewn on.
· A $10,000 Kazak will have brilliantly shiny wool on wool warps versus a $200 recreation with dull wool on cotton warps.
· Persian rugs are not made using the standard units of measure, therefore the rugs will be sized using the metric system.
While the absence or presence of fringe does not affect the value of a rug, it is noted. Fine quality wool is not always fine gauge wool. The different tribes have their own style of hand spinning the wool for the desired outcome, and some of the more tribal pieces exhibit excellent quality, however thicker, wool.
Our rug experts analyze a rug according to a set standard of several checkpoints, including design and color combinations, structure, weft, pile, etc. But remember, the most important aspect of the rug’s value is its appeal to you.
New rugs are produced in Pakistan and India, are of good quality, and can be used with antique rugs.
